Why restringing matters for juniors
Juniors are still developing their technique, and a racket with dead strings sends the wrong feedback. When strings lose tension, the ball trampolines unpredictably — making it harder for a young player to develop consistent timing and control. Fresh strings give honest feedback, which is exactly what a developing player needs.
Beyond technique, juniors often swing harder than people realise. Growing players hit with increasing power, and strings that were fine last season may be completely dead by mid-season this year.
How often should juniors restring?
A simple rule of thumb: restring as many times per year as you play per week.
- Casual (1–2 times/week) — restring once or twice a year, or at the start of each season.
- Regular training (3–4 times/week) — every 3–4 months. Strings lose tension even without visible breakage.
- Squad or academy players (5+ times/week) — every 6–8 weeks. High-volume hitting depletes tension fast.
Tip: If your junior's racket is more than 6 months old and they haven't restrung it, the strings are almost certainly dead — even if they haven't broken.
What happens if you leave it too long?
Dead strings aren't just a performance issue — they can cause real problems:
- Arm strain: Strings that have lost tension transmit more shock to the elbow and wrist. Junior arms are still developing and are particularly vulnerable.
- Bad habits: Players subconsciously adjust their swing to compensate for inconsistent response, baking in technique problems that are hard to undo.
- Lost enjoyment: The ball feels dead, rallies are shorter, and the game feels harder. Many juniors lose motivation without ever knowing why.
- Frame damage: Badly worn strings can cause uneven tension across the frame, stressing the racket structure over time.
What string is right for a junior?
For most juniors, a multifilament or synthetic gut string at a lower tension (around 20–22 kg) is ideal. It provides a forgiving, comfortable response that protects developing arms and helps with power generation — important when a junior is still building strength.
Our Solinco and Tecnifibre strings are well suited to junior players. Both offer a good blend of durability and arm-friendly playability at a price that makes regular restringing practical.
